If Navy Federal Credit Union made your mortgage, you most likely have no PMI to cancel. Below is what Navy Federal says, what it charges instead, and who to contact if your loan does carry mortgage insurance.
Lender policies and phone numbers change over time. We checked the details below against Navy Federal's own pages on October 17, 2026. Confirm them with Navy Federal before you act.
What Navy Federal Says
Navy Federal's mortgage FAQ says that most lenders require PMI when the down payment is under 20%, and that Navy Federal never requires it on any of its mortgage products. Its conventional fixed-rate, Military Choice and Homebuyers Choice loan pages each say the same.
The Funding Fee Is Not PMI
Navy Federal's Choice loans allow purchases with no down payment in most states. Instead of PMI, they carry an upfront funding fee of 1.75% of the loan amount. It can be financed into the loan, waived in exchange for a rate 0.375% higher, or waived with a 3% down payment. It is charged once, so there is nothing to cancel later.
Navy Federal's VA loans also include a funding fee in the loan amount. VA loans do not carry mortgage insurance.
If Your Loan Does Carry Mortgage Insurance
Navy Federal's escrow FAQ says that on some loans, mortgage insurance can be cancelled once the loan-to-value ratio reaches a set percentage. On others, it stays until the loan is refinanced or paid off. Navy Federal asks you to contact it to find out which applies to your loan:

If it is borrower-paid PMI on a conventional loan for your primary residence, federal law gives you the same rights as at any other servicer. You can ask in writing to cancel it once the balance reaches 80% of the home's original value. It must end automatically at 78%, or at the midpoint of the loan, as long as you are current. Navy Federal's own PMI article gives the same 80% and 78% points.
The Bottom Line
Most Navy Federal mortgages have no PMI. The 1.75% funding fee on Choice loans is a one-time charge, not insurance. If you pay mortgage insurance on a Navy Federal loan, ask Navy Federal what kind it is and whether it can be cancelled.
